Living in Central Florida, we’re fortunate to be able to take a dip in the pool or even swim at the beach much later than most people across the country, but as you know it won’t be too long before we we’re wearing light jackets or sweaters attending a local High School Football game on a Friday night or even a UCF football game on a Saturday night. In fact, pretty soon you may find yourself snuggling up in a blanket at home watching football on television as well. So, now is the best time to start preparing your home’s heating system for the upcoming cooler nights.
We’ve listed below a handful of easy things you can do as a homeowner to be better prepared for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. These helpful tips can save you from costly repairs in the near future.
Change your filters. There are a wide array of home filters and each one should be replaced or cleaned at various times. However, whether you replace/clean them monthly, every other month, or at the beginning of each season, the bottom line is that your home filter should be clean at all times in order to maximize your air flow. It makes perfect sense that a clean filter will help you heat and cool your home more efficiently than a dirty filter. Because filters trap harmful particles from being circulated in your home by forcing air through a fine mesh, a dirty filter will hinder the unit from doing its job.
Check for leaks. Prevent drafts and decrease energy waste by sealing up all windows and doors. Don’t forget to check your ductwork for leaks as well. If you’re not able to do this yourself, please contact the professionals at ABC Cleaning, Inc.
Start warming up your unit. Similar to cars that need time to get warmed up when it’s cold outside, your HVAC system needs time to adjust to heating and may take some time to get back to its proper speed and efficiency because it remained unused for throughout the Spring and Summer. Once our nights begin getting a little cooler, turn your heater on a low setting to allow some time to adjust to the cooler weather.
Check alarms and detectors. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are important devices that keep you and your family safe. Make sure to replace the batteries and test each of your devices to ensure they’re working properly. Also, keep in mind, The U.S. Fire Administration recommends that you replace your smoke detectors every 10 years.
Clean your outdoor unit . Check for debris and damage to your outside unit. Remove all debris to ensure proper airflow and prevent dirt or leaves from getting inside the unit and on the coils. If you see any signs of damage, give us a call.
As a reminder, the best way to prepare your home for fall is to schedule a maintenance checkup with ABC Cleaning, Inc. Having your system cleaned regularly will improve indoor air quality, extend the life of your system and increase the energy efficiency of your home because a clean unit doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire.
